Unveiling the History of Fenit Lighthouse

Step back in time and explore the fascinating history of the Lighthouse. This iconic landmark has witnessed centuries of maritime activity and played a crucial role in guiding ships safely along the rugged coastline of Tralee Bay.

Construction began in 1848 & was completed in 1851. The station was manned by lightkeepers from 1854 to 1956. Although it became automated in 1954, a keeper continued to live there until 1956, after which the lighthouse was maintained from the mainland.

In 1854, the first light shone at Little Samphire Island Lighthouse, kerosene was the common fuel used for the lamps. However, by the 1860s, coal became widely adopted to power the lamps, and automation at the lighthouse was fueled by gas.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that electrification occurred through the use of a generator. By 2014, solar panels were installed for the electricity of the house, but a generator remains in operation to serve the plant room.

Interestingly, an electrical cable has never been connected to Little Samphire Island from the mainland.
